Heaters for above ground pools are the best option to maintain the water at the right temperature which can be very useful when you want to use your pool at night or during the winters. Having a heater is not as important as having a pool liner, but it does add some extra comfort to your pool.
Before buying any type of heater, you should understand how they work and what type is best for your pool.
The important things to consider before selecting a heater include fuel economy, accessibility of fuels, the comparable cost of the product, and emissions. Pool heaters using different fuel types have different capacities, heating times, costs and capabilities.
Various Types of Above Ground Pool Heaters
Before I bought myself a heater for my pool, I did some research and found that there are quite a few types of heaters available on the market including:
This is an old-fashioned heater and is obviously not a popular choice anymore. To use it, you have to put some firewood in its base and then burn it. This causes the water-filled chamber above it to heat. The heated water then flows through the pipe into the pool.
This is definitely a better choice when compared to the wood-based heater. It is portable and requires propane gas to function. The gas is filled in a bottle and which is detachable and can be used with other gas-based appliances. You can even share it with your gas grill. It heats up the pool quickly, but the only drawback is it takes a lot of gas, which is expensive and most of these propane pool heaters are not fuel efficient. Thus the cost of running these heaters is high.
It’s one of my favorite choices, as most of these electric heaters work very efficiently. They are the perfect choice for several reasons. However, they are a bit costly when compared to other types of heaters. This is the only drawback of the electric pool heaters.
Solar Pool Heater
Many people prefer solar pool heaters, as they take heat from the sun, therefore, eliminating the requirement of any type of power source to warm the pool water. But, installing solar pool heaters is quite a costly affair. Another drawback is that these need direct sunlight to work efficiently making them useless in cloudy days and places which don’t have much sunlight.
Before we begin with the list, you should know that the heating capacity of every heater is rated in terms of BTUs. BTU stands for British Thermal Unit and is a measure of heat energy.
Here is a table that will help you understand and estimate the BTU unit used in the description of the heaters below
|100,000 – 200,000||1,000 – 10,000||300|
|200,000 – 300,000||10,000 – 20,000||500|
|300,000 – 400,000||20,000 – 40,000||800|
|400,000+||40,000 – 80,000||1200|
Tip: It is recommended to buy a heater with slightly more heating capacity than your pool’s requirement.
