Pool heaters for above ground pools are the best option to maintain the water at the right temperature which can be very useful when you want use your pool at night or during the winters. Having a heater for your pool can be just as important as having an above ground pool liner.
Before buying any type of above ground pool heater, you should understand how it works and what type of heater is best for your pool.
The important facts to consider before selecting an above ground pool heater include: fuel economy, accessibility of fuels, the comparable cost of the product, and emissions. Pool heaters using diffent fuel types have different capacities, heating times, costs and capabilities.
Various Types of Above Ground Pool Heaters
Before I bought myself an above ground pool heater, I did a little bit of research and found out that there are quite a few types of above pool heaters available on the market including:
This is not a popular heater. To use this heater, you have to put some firewood in a chamber and burn it. The heated water then flows through the pipe into the pool and warms up the pool, which takes forever to get a warm temperature.
Propane Pool Heater
I found this heater interesting, as it is portable and you can take the gas bottle anywhere when you don’t want to use it in the pool. You can even share it with your gas grill. It heats up the pool quickly, but the only drawback is it takes a lot of gas, which is expensive and most of these propane pool heaters are not fuel efficient.
Electric Pool Heater
It is one of my favorite choices, as most of these electric heaters work very efficiently. They are the perfect choice for several reasons. However, they are a bit costly to use, as they use a 220V outlet. This is the only drawback of the electric pool heater as many people cannot use it to warm their pool.
Solar Pool Heater
I am sure that many people prefer solar pool heater, as they take heat from the sun, no power required to make the water warm in the pool. But, installing solar pool heaters is quite a costly affair. The cost depends on the type of the heater you choose. The drawback is, these need direct sunlight to work efficiently and hence in the cooler climate regions, they may not work at all.
Before we begin with the list, you should know that the heating capacity of every heater is rated in terms of BTUs. BTU stands for British Thermal Unit and is a measure of heat energy.
Here is a table that will help you understand and estimate the BTU unit used in the description of the heaters below
|100,000 – 200,000||1,000 – 10,000||300|
|200,000 – 300,000||10,000 – 20,000||500|
|300,000 – 400,000||20,000 – 40,000||800|
|400,000+||40,000 – 80,000||1200|
Tip: It is recommended to buy a heater with slightly more heating capacity than your pool’s requirement.
